A seven-year-old girl is thought to have been eaten by a crocodile
after Australian police said they found what they believe to be human
remains inside the reptile.
The youngster was swimming with her family in a remote waterhole when she was attacked and dragged under by the 10-foot croc.
Aussie rangers shot the animal a day later.
Tests on the crocodile have suggested its stomach contains human bones.
A police spokesman told the AFP news agency: “Further forensic testing will be conducted in Darwin.”
The chilling attack happened at the Gumarrirnbang outstation, 300 miles east of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory.
The girl was last seen being dragged under the water by the crocodile, which had also attacked a man who was with her in the water.
Police said there had been no previous sightings of crocodiles in the area, adding that the community believed the waterhole – or billabong – was safe.
Saltwater crocodiles are a protected species in Australia, however, attacks on humans are extremely rare.
